The Sound of “Gladiator” and “Dune” Up Close: The Armenian Duduk at BRAWO in Stuttgart
From November 20 to 22, 2026, visitors to BRAWO – The Wind Orchestra Trade Fair can experience up close an instrument that many know only from the cinema: the Armenian duduk. At Duduk-Rocks’ booth 2G32, it will be demonstrated live. Visitors will receive expert advice and can try the instrument for themselves and buy it on the spot.
An Ancient Sound Conquers the World
The duduk is one of the oldest wind instruments in the world. Made from apricot wood and played with a large double reed, it produces a warm, slightly veiled tone that comes remarkably close to the human voice. In 2005, UNESCO recognized the duduk and its music as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
In recent years, worldwide demand for duduks has risen sharply – and no longer only among people of Armenian descent. Film music has played a major role: Hans Zimmer used the duduk in his soundtracks for “Gladiator” as well as “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two,” bringing its sound to an audience of millions.
Musically, the duduk is remarkably versatile: its sustained, singing tone lends sacred music a special depth, it shapes the melancholic tonal colors of the Mediterranean and the Orient, and with its calm, breathing phrases it is increasingly sought after in meditation, yoga and relaxing music.
From the Cinema to the Trade Fair Booth: Try the Duduk Yourself
BRAWO is Germany’s only trade fair dedicated entirely to wind music and part of the Stuttgart Autumn Fair (Stuttgarter Messeherbst). Alongside brass and woodwind instruments from around the world, this year it offers a very special listening experience.
At booth 2G32, visitors can have the instrument played for them and try it out themselves – whether experienced wind players looking for new tonal colors or curious newcomers with no prior experience.
Specialist advisors explain construction, playing technique and how to choose the right key – in German, English and Armenian. Anyone who falls for the instrument can purchase it directly at the booth.

On display are handcrafted duduks from renowned master workshops, priced from 199 to 2,499 euros, as well as related traditional wind instruments such as the blul, zurna, shvi and pku. In addition to the traditional apricot-wood version, Duduk-Rocks offers what it says is the world’s largest selection of duduks made from exotic woods – these instruments will also be demonstrated at the fair, inviting visitors to compare their sounds.
“The duduk speaks to people wherever they come from. Its sound touches moviegoers just as much as church musicians or people looking for calm. What is particularly striking is how many of our customers want to learn the duduk as their very first instrument as adults. We want to make this effect tangible for everyone in Stuttgart,” says Artur Demurchyan, founder of Duduk-Rocks.
Even Without Visiting the Fair
